Bella-May has Curly Mixed Hair from Her Parents!

In this week’s Curl Type of the Week feature, we interviewed a young and beautiful 5 year old girl with a social media influence, named Bella-May! Here are Bella-May’s responses to some of our questions concerning her lifestyle, curly mixed hair, and helpful tips on how to manage curly hair based on her own experience, that can then be passed on for other curly haired boys and girls to apply to their own hair:

1) Introduce yourself!  What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? Favorite activity? Favorite thing to do in her free time?

I’m Bella-May, I’m a happy, positive and full of life 5years old (6 in August). I love dancing, singing, composing music and freestyling (I enjoy rapping and freestyling especially with my dad, and we spend a lot of time together playing and composing music and making songs). I love acting and filming, dancing (I practice

ballet, jazz, street dance) and learning piano. I also like gymnastics and I love tumbling!

I am a big reader: every night with my mum we enjoy reading my favourite books, such as rhyming books and the Julia Donaldson stories, but I always look for new books to read. I love affirmations, and I have a lot of affirmation books which I like to read out loud.

I am a big fan of movies! I want to become an actress and a director. My favourite movies so far are Annie (the remake with Quvenzhané Wallis), Moana, The Princess and The Frog (Tiana is the best princess!) and musicals! I listen to a lot of music. I really enjoy listening to Motive and Positions from Ariana Grande, Girl Like Me from Shakira, and Justin Bieber Peaches, but I also love Maroon 5, Jason Derulo, Beyonce, Jlo, Will Smith… Music is always on in our house!

I love school and I have a lot of friends in my class. I am in Year 1 and my favourite subjects are phonics, reading, music and art. During choosing time at school, I like to do amazing drawings and paintings for my family and to build Lego! In my free time I love to play with my friends and with my family, composing music, coming up with new dance moves and drawing and painting. I also love exploring and going on adventurous trips and holidays!

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here

My hair is a 4aspringy hair!

3) Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

I have curly mixed hair that is a mix between my father’s afro hair and my mother’s wavy Mediterranean hair. My auntie (mum’s sister) has the same hair as me, and my grandfather used to have curls when he was younger.

4)  How do you like to wear your hair?

I like to keep it down or up in a very high ponytail. I also like to pull it up in two side ponytails (or half ponytails). I love to wear colourful bows, headbands and scrunchies. On occasions, I like to have some braids designs.

5) How would you define your style?  (ie, are you a dress up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc.  What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.

Casual street or casual smart depending on occasion. I love to choose my own style and to pick dresses from the shop. I also have a lot of clothes from Italy, the fashion there is amazing also for kids! Dressing up – I love to dress up like Disney princesses and superheroes – and I love to play and combine accessories, glasses, bracelets, hairbands and jewellery.

6) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair? Best advice for kids with curly hair?

I do deep conditioning for my hair. We comb it from the bottom up, and lock my lock rather than all together. We have a baby Johnson “no more tangle” water spray that we use daily for gentle combing and curls styling. We trim the hair to remove split and frayed ends and use a diffuser with medium heat to avoid drying the hair. At the end of the wash, we use some hair oil for moisture.

7) What do you wash and condition your hair with? How often?

Roughly every 5 days, more often in summer time, I use baby Johnson shampoo for a gentle wash, Tresemme hair conditioning and before drying we apply Garnier hair food (coconut and macadamia). All products we use are coconut, avocado or macadamia based – for deep conditioning.

8) How often do you wash your hair and why?

Once or twice per week. Increased frequency when hot.

9) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why?

Depending on weeks. We normally wash it in the afternoon but It does depend on the week.

10) If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning? Any tips for making the style last overnight?

A quick water base Johnson hair spray and some gentle combing with the hands and shape is best.

11) Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey”.  Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

I always loved my hair, I love it long and curly and I love to play with it. I’m very proud of my hair and I like to style it in different ways, but I like them down the most as I can play with my curls!
