Embrace Your Curls Like Brooke Does!

In this week’s feature, we have 6 year old social media influencer, Brooke as our Curlee Girlee of the Week!  Although she is just 6 years old, her mother has shared so many wonderful things about her. Below, you will find her mother’s answers to the set of questions we provided to give insight into what Brooke loves to do in her free time as well as what she is interested in, how Brooke’s mother manages her daughter’s curly hair, and some curly hair management tips Brooke’s mom recommends to help you embrace your curls like Brooke!. These tips can be passed on to other curly haired boys and girls, as well as their parents who take care of their hair, around the world that struggle with their beautiful head of curls and seek guidance on how to better manage them.

1) Introduce yourself!  What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? Favorite activity? Favorite thing to do in her free time?

Hello! My name is Brooke Amor Ramsay, I am 6 years old and in the first grade. My favorite book is I am Enough by Grace Byers which is about a beautiful young black girl like myself who accepts herself and other kids who are different. My favorite movies are Back to the Net and Scales. When I am not in school I like to spend time with my mommy, my friends, photoshoots, fashion shows and make TikTok videos of course.

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here.

Based on your hair chart, I am a 4A

3. Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

Based on your hair chart: Mom: 3A/3C Dad: 4B/4C

4)  How do you like to wear your hair?

I like to change it. I love my natural curly hair and my mom always points out other kids and adults who have curly hair like me. I also like to get my hair straightened from time to time to see it stretched out and my full length. I also enjoy protective hairstyles with braids, passion twists and goddess locs.

5) How would you define your style?  (ie, are you a dress up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc.  What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.

For sure I am a fancy dress up girl that loves playing in tutu’s, wearing dresses and playing in my mommy’s make-up.

6) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair? Best advice for kids with curly hair?

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! The key to curly hair is keeping it moisturized and it naturally dries out fast. Every time Brooke gets her hair washed, we comb through the conditioner along with olive oil and let it sit for 5 minutes before washing it out and then leave in conditioner is applied.

Once a month Brooke also gets a hot oil & deep conditioner treatment where the products stay in for at least 30 minutes and sometimes overnight and then we wash it out. I use my own concoction of oils mixed with her @_kaleidokids conditioner.

7) What do you wash and condition your hair with? How often?

I use @_kaleidokids UniKorn Enchanted Garden Shampoo and Conditioner. I started using their products because my mom likes their adult products.

Curly-I wash my hair twice a week Blow Dry Straight-I wash my hair once every 2 weeks

8) How often do you wash your hair and why?

When rocking my natural hair (which is most of the time) I wash my hair twice a week and I get a monthly hot oil and deep conditioner treatment.

9) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why?

I wash my hair in the evenings when I take my bath or shower so my mom has the time to properly give my hair amazing attention and care allowing my hair to naturally air dry.

10) If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning? Any tips for making the style last overnight?

For curly hair I just sleep wild and free and freshen up my hair with @_kaleidokids Kaleido Kids Miracle Spray and Unikorn TwiLight Curl Defining Gel when setting my hair.

11) Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey”.  Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

My daughter really loves her curly hair because I purposely point out kids, teens and adults with curly hair of different curly lengths and patterns and always compliments how beautiful their hair is. I point out actresses @mykalscorner from Mixedish, @yarashahidi and @traceeellisross from Blackish.

I also purchase a variety of African-American and Mixed Barbie dolls of all shades for representation that she can relate to, see herself in, and in her family. I also buy many books that teach you to embrace your curls and feature positive hair images, especially with my daughter being a young black girl in a world where people are still judged by their hair, so I strive to encourage positive self-images. Although we have straightened a few times for special occasions, she understands it is just that and has confidence in all the hairstyles she tries.

12) Have you read our Curlee Girlee book series?  If not get your copy by clicking here. Our Curlee Girlee books were written to ensure that all curly girls belong to our Curlee Girlee family and learn to love and embrace their curls understanding that their hair is part of a greater legacy they share with those who came before them and will one day share with those who come after.

Not yet, but will definitely order and add to her book collection and we look forward to reading them.
