Curlee Girlee is back and ready to take on the world of STEM, in Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent

Loving who we are- it is integral to success in life and ultimately to happiness.  But at times, loving certain aspects about oneself is hard. Atara Twersky is trying to change the conversation regarding hair positivity for curly girls everywhere!  Atara is an attorney and author who lives in New York City with her husband and three young children. Her youngest daughter, whom she lovingly nicknamed Curly Girly (Curlee Girlee), inspired her to write a book series dedicated to encouraging and empowering curly girls everywhere to love what makes them unique. After the debut of her first book,  Curlee Girlee, a movement was sparked and the Curlee Girlee brand came to life. The next book in the Curlee Girlee series, Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent, tells the story of Curlee Girlee as she struggles to find something she is good at and in which she can shine. After several mishaps, she realizes her talent may not resemble her friend’s talents but is equally as unique to her as theirs is to them.  Curlee Girlee finds herself in the world of science and STEM; Science can be a talent too, she realizes, and children will delight and rejoice with Curlee Girlee as she once again demonstrates her creativity and determination as she learns the lessons of self-love and limitless imagination.

STEM and Curlee Girlee’s unconventional talent

Curlee Girlee’s talent is considered unconventional; because it relates to the sciences. Most conventional talents relate to the more traditional arts like singing or dancing.  Many children do not see themselves as having a traditional talent, however, and Atara wanted to support and encourage children to explore passions beyond those conventions. Curlee Girlee’s talent in the field of STEM encourages girls to go after their dreams, wherever those dreams may lie.  STEM is the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Atara wants to ensure that girls view STEM as fields they can enter and excel in. In her new book, she explores these possibilities in an exciting story with adventures and mishaps along the way that children everywhere will relate to.

Who is Curlee Girlee?

Atara has been asked multiple times, why her character is called Curlee Girlee and why there is no conventional name attached to this character?   The reason is simple: she wants every curly girly in the world to be able to fill their name in before or after the words “Curlee Girlee”. Atara even designed and created t-shirts with the slogan “I am a curlee girlee” which are purchased around the world as girls everywhere are learning to embrace this movement of loving their natural hair.   Society may not always cooperate with the movement of loving our natural selves.  Throughout history and even currently, curly hair is discouraged and even considered unprofessional. This can be damaging not just for curly girls, but for women in general. Atara wants to create hair positivity for women with all types of hair. Atara has a simple message focused on positivity. This message is not just to show positivity to others, but to also be positive about oneself. Self-love is one of the hardest things to achieve. Atara wants to teach young girls to love their hair when they are young; so that the narrative they tell themselves begins to change and loving their hair just as it becomes simply a part of who they are.

Curlee Girlee is meant to be a role model. A fictional character that children relate to and can emulate.  With her fierce determination, ability to overcome struggles, creative and fun personality, Curlee Girlee ultimately embodies a young girl who doesn’t give up in the face of adversity and ultimately learns the lessons of self-love and acceptance.

The woman behind the Curlee Girlee

Atara knows first hand the trials of raising children and a daughter with curly hair, especially when that child’s features’ (in this instance, hair) are so dissimilar from everyone else in the family. Her books are written with a purpose to empower, which is undeniable. Prior to writing Curlee Girlee,  Atara tried finding helpful tools to empower her young curly girl, but she didn’t feel there was a character that children could relate to or see themselves reflected in.  The Curlee Girlee series is for parents to use as a tool and a guide, engaging and entertaining children without them noticing that while entertained, they are learning the valuable lesson of self- love and limitless imagination.   This second installment in the series opens its message to a broader audience and allows Curlee Girlee to empower an even larger demographic of young girls curly and otherwise.

The podcast for parents of curly and non-curly kids

Atara is now also the host of a podcast, Curlee Girlee’s Crackin’ the Kid Code, which is also a great resource for parents. Together with her co-host, Grace Cross, owner of  The Baby Spot,  Grace and Atara interview inspiring guests who are change-makers in their field.  In the episode titled, “As Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent launches into the world of STEM, Atara is our interviewee!” You guessed it, Atara is interviewed by Grace and provides insight into her new book. She also shares parenting tools that have worked for her and some along the way that have not.  You will get a glimpse into the person behind the movement and books as Atara shares a few personal interests and passions. One of her biggest passions is inclusivity. Like the original Curlee Girlee book, Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent is similarly written to be a universal story. Showcasing STEM as a talent, which can and should be made available for boys and girls alike… Atara wants her readers to know that talents lie in unusual places and often do not show themselves at first glance.

Curlee Girlee’s new adventure is here just in time for the holiday season

With the holidays quickly approaching, Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent would be the perfect gift for any curly or non-curly girl. Its message is clear, powerful, and inviting.

Near the end of Atara’s interview, Grace asked her to identify three characteristics she loves and three things she feels passionate about.  We won’t give these away only to say all of these traits are depicted by Curlee Girlee in the book series. Atara wants all of her young readers to identify positive personality traits in the life of Curlee Girlee.  Curlee Girlee the series and the newest book, shed light on many important and current issues while also engaging and entertaining her readers.  Somewhere in this world right now is a young girl looking for the courage to step out of her comfort zone and take chances.  Look for Curlee Girlee’s Got Talent as you are shopping this holiday season.
