This week, we chose 2-year-old social media influencer, Malaya Brielle as our Curlee Girlee of the Week who has springy 4a Natural Hair! Although she is only 2 years old, her mother has shared so many wonderful things about her. Below, you will find her mother’s answers to the set of questions we provided to give insight into what Malaya loves to do in her free time, how Malaya’s mother manages her daughter’s curly 4A natural hair, and some curly hair management tips Malaya’s mom recommends. These tips can be passed on to other curly haired boys and girls, as well as their parents who take care of their hair, around the world that struggle with their beautiful head of curls and seek guidance on how to better manage them.

1) Introduce yourself! What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? Favorite activity? Favorite thing to do in her free time?

Curlee Girlee of the Week is Miss Malaya! She is a 2 year old social media influencer, mainly on Instagram. Since she is only 2 years old, she is not in school yet. When asked about her favorite movie, she says that Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat is her all time favorite. She does not have a favorite song, but her mom says that Malaya enjoys listening to all of the songs from the hit kids TV show, Cocomelon. When she is not striking a pose for Instagram, some of Malaya’s favorite things that she loves to do in her free time are dancing and singing. Sounds like Malaya has so many talents at such a young age!

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here.

When asked about her curly hair type, Malaya’s mom says that Malaya’s hair is a springy 4A hair.

3. Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

Malaya’s mom says that Malaya is not the only one in her family with a beautiful head of curls! Malaya’s mommy also has curly hair and so does her nana and aunties. It seems that Malaya has so many beautiful curly-haired women in her family! Now we know where she got that gorgeous 4A curls from!

4)  How do you like to wear your hair?

Although Malaya is not at an old enough age to do her own hair, her mother says that Malaya loves and prefers to wear her hair in a curly hair ponytail!

5) How would you define your style? (ie, are you a dress up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc.  What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.

When asked about the type of clothes Malaya loves to wear, her mother says that she does not have a specific fashion style or preference. Instead, Malaya loves to play around with different clothing styles for each of the four seasons, no matter where she goes. Malaya truly has no preference: she loves wearing all different kinds of clothing and styles!

6) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair? Best advice for kids with curly hair?

In regards to curly hair care tips, one hair care tip that Malaya’s mother really stresses is to never brush your child’s curly hair when they have become dry. This is because brushing curly hair while it is dry can become a painful experience for your child as well as a hassle to detangle and will consequently get rid of the curls’ natural shape. Therefore, Malaya’s mother recommends for parents of every curly-headed boy and girl to always make sure their child’s curly hair is damp enough to make brushing their hair easier, less painful, and less time-consuming in the long run.

7) How often do you wash your hair and why?

Malaya’s mother says that she washes Malaya’s hair every other week. This is very common as it is a well-known fact that washing your hair too often can be damaging to your hair.

8) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why? If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning?

Malaya is an evening hair washer instead of a morning hair washer. Her mother washes her hair at night so that it is dry and taken care of by the time she wakes up in the morning. Malaya’s mother says that Malaya definitely sleeps on her curly hair; therefore, having an evening routine is really important when trying to wake up with easy to manage curls in the morning. Which is why Malaya’s mom strongly recommends combing your child’s curls while it is still damp!

9)Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey.” Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

When asked about how and whether Malaya’s curly hair has impacted her self-image, her mother says that her curly hair has done nothing but have had and still has a positive impact on her life. She says that Malaya loves her hair so much that she even loves when her curly hair blows in the wind. Malaya’s mom does not think that she would change her curly hair at all or develop any negative feelings towards her hair, and we definitely do not want her to!
