This Curly Girl has 3A Curls

In this week’s Curl Type of the Week feature, we interviewed young and beautiful, 9-year-old curly-haired Instagram influencer, Aliyah Lusk. Here are her responses to our questions concerning her lifestyle, her 3A curls, and helpful tips on how to manage curly hair based on her own experience, that can then be passed on for other curly-haired boys and girls to use:

1) Introduce yourself! What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? What is her favorite activity? Her favorite thing to do in her free time?

Hi my name is Aliyah Lusk. I am a 9-year-old girl and I am in the 3rd grade in elementary school. The type of music that I really like to listen to is R&b (rhythm and blues) music. My favorite movie at the time being is the well-known Disney animated movie, The Lady and the Tramp. My favorite quote has to be, “Be who you want to be.” My favorite subject in school is Math. Some of my favorite things that I like to do in my free time are painting and hiking. When I have the time for it, I like to create content and model for my social media, specifically for the Instagram platform.

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here.

If I were to define my curly hair type, my curly hair has a lot of spirals, so I would say that my curl type is Spirally 3A curls.

3. Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

Curly hair does run in my family! Both of my parents are curly-headed: my mom has wavy hair and my dad has curly hair.

4)  How do you like to wear your hair?

The way I like to wear my hair is mostly down.

5) How would you define your style?  (ie, are you a dress-up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc. What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.)

If I were to define my dress-up style, I would have to say that my clothing style is defined by anything that is trending but the clothes that I usually wear are casual ripped jeans, t-shirts and kicks. That is what I would normally wear to school, but I would do all that I can to make my outfit more stylish, of course.

5) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair?

One hair care tip that I can not stress enough for curly-haired kids to follow for taking care of their hair is to put your hair in braids before going to bed. I put my hair in two braids before going to sleep because my mom always says that my hair is supposed to grow that way. The braids do really help because my hair becomes less tangled when I wake up in the morning. My best advice for all kids with curly hair, overall? I would definitely recommend curly-haired kids to braid their hair at night as it definitely helps when you want to avoid detangling your hair in the morning.

6) What do you wash and condition your hair with?

I normally wash my hair with the Tresemme Curl Hydrate Shampoo for Curly Hair with a matching conditioner. How often do I wash my hair? I wash and condition my hair as often as three times a week.

7) How often do you wash your hair and why?

I wash my curly hair pretty much every other day! Some days my curls are better than other days, especially if I do not wash my curly hair as much. Plus, it is not always a good thing to wash your curly hair everyday.

8) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why?

I am a morning hair washer, rather than an evening hair washer. This is because that is how I start off my day, especially if I am staying in for the entire day.

9) If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning?

In the nighttime, I just spray my hair with water and put in my leave-in conditioner to make my hair last overnight. As for tips for making the curly hair last overnight? I recommend wearing a hair bonnet overnight since I wear a hair bonnet sometimes at night. Usually, my curls are great the following day after wearing the hair bonnet. I mainly just add water and leave-in conditioner on my hair before bed.

10) Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey.” Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

I would not say that my hair is completely curly hair; I would say that my hair is somewhat more wavy than curly. My mom for sure thought that I would have curly hair since I am a child of mixed race. I am both Latina and African American; it was not until I turned 7 years old that my hair texture started to change and my curls were starting to become more defined, which both my mom and I really love. I have never complained about my curly hair but, as you can ask my mom, now I love to talk about my curly hair all the time!
