Welcome to our new series “Changing the Coarse”: Meet Eman!

Changing the Coarse of Curly hair- Around the World: Featuring Eman From Egypt this week!

At Curlee Girlee we understand how important our hair is to both our identity and our sense of self-worth.  In our new blog series, we are working to support and empower Curlee Girlees all around the world as they battle stereotypes and overcome negative hair stigmas.  Empowerment begins with loving our hair just as it is- no one understands this more than a curly girl!

Today we are introducing Eman. Eman is from Egypt and was formerly employed at a bank. Eman has curly hair and wore her natural hair in the workplace. She discusses the various influences of European countries and how Eurocentric beauty standards often created expectations regarding how to dress and present one’s self in her workplace in Egypt. Due to these standards, she was often asked by employers to straighten her hair in the workplace. The pressure she felt at work to conform and have her hair tamed was so overwhelming that ultimately it was one of the reasons she actually felt she may be more comfortable living elsewhere. These constant expectations of conformity was just one of the many driving factors that led Eman to move to Spain, hoping she would be more comfortable in her skin in this Country. Many Egyptian and Mediarrian women have curly hair and have felt similar frustrations and pressure to apply heat and straighten their natural hair.
