Madison and her Mom Recommend Jojoba Oil for Hair!

In this week’s feature, we have social media influencer, Madison as our Curlee Girlee of the Week! Although she is just 11 months old, her mother has shared so many wonderful things about her. Below, you will find her mother’s answers to the set of questions we provided to give insight into what Madison loves to do in her free time as well as what she is interested in, how her mother manages her kid’s curly hair, and some curly hair management tips her mom recommends. These tips can be passed on to other curly haired boys and girls, as well as their parents who take care of their hair, around the world that struggle with their beautiful head of curls and seek guidance on how to better manage them:

1) Introduce yourself!  What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? Favorite activity? Favorite thing to do in her free time?

My name is Madison and I am 11 months old! My favorite books are I Am One of A Kind and I Am A Black Girl written by my cousin, Brittany Allen! My favorite thing to do in my free time is snuggle beside mama while she sings my favorite songs.

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here

My hair curl type is Bouncy 4b!

3) Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

My mama and dada both had big and curly hair when they were babies just like me! My mama’s hair is still full of curls, while dada doesn’t anymore. I am half Jamaican on my dada’s side. My Nona, aunties, and grandma have such long and beautiful hair that I love to play in!

4)  How do you like to wear your hair?

I like to wear my hair out in a poof! Mama tries to style it every once in a while but I’m a busy bee so natural poof with a headband is my favorite!

5) How would you define your style?  (ie, are you a dress up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc.  What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.

My favorite way to dress up is a mix of girly and trendy! I like girly dresses every now and then… with mixing in trendy styles like ripped jeans or off the shoulder tops as well!

6) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair? Best advice for kids with curly hair?

A hair care tip I can share is that less is more when you’re little like me! My mama just washed my hair once a week and didn’t use any product until 11 months so that my hair wouldn’t get too weighed down! Mama now uses a little tea tree and jojoba oil for hair while styling and that keeps my bouncy curls…bouncing!

However, it is important to acknowledge that everybody’s hair is different, so not every product will work the same for everyone. That being said, you can find the right hair product that works best for your child by first finding out what your curly hair type is. You can then google which type of hair products work best for your hair type. We actually wrote an article about the 5 best natural products for curly hair that you can check out.

7) What do you wash and condition your hair with? How often?

Mama washes my hair with Aquaphor shampoo once a week!

8) How often do you wash your hair and why?

We only wash once a week because we try not to dry my scalp by washing too often and don’t go longer because my scalp can get pretty sweaty!  Washing your hair either in the morning or in the evening has its own pros and cons, but making time to wash your curly hair is based on your time and convenience. What is most important to remember is that every person with curly hair needs a proper hair care routine!

9) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why?

Mama washes my hair at night when dad can help too because washing hair is not on my list of favorite activities!!

10) If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning? Any tips for making the style last overnight?

In the morning, mama will spray a bit of water on my curls, a little tea tree and jojoba oil, then we are ready for the day of pictures ahead!

11) Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey”.  Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

Not old enough yet 🙂

12) Have you read our Curlee Girlee book series? If not get your copy by clicking here.
