One of Sa’Riya’s Favorite 4C Hair Styles is a High Afro Puff!

In this week’s Curl Type of the Week feature, we interviewed a young and beautiful 2 year old girl with a social media influence, named Sa’Riya! Although she is only 2 years old, her mother has a lot of nice things to say about her! Here are Sa’Riya’s mom’s responses to some of our questions concerning her daughter’s lifestyle, curly hair, 4C hair styles, and helpful tips on how to manage curly hair based on her own experience, that can then be passed on for other curly haired boys and girls to apply to their own hair:

1) Introduce yourself!  What is your age, grade, favorite books, movies, favorite quote, song? What is her favorite school subject? Favorite activity? Favorite thing to do in her free time?

Meet our Curl Type of the Week Sa’Riya Bah! She is two years old. Her mom says that her favorite book to read is “B is for Black Girl,” by Channing Moreland. According to her mom, her favorite activities are dancing and modeling. Her current favorite song to listen to is “Brown skin girl” by Beyoncé.

2) Your curls! What is your hair curl type? If you don’t know, please check out our reference page here

Based on our hair curl type reference page, Sa’Riya has 4c hair!

3) Who else in your family has curly hair? Check out our family tree here which is a fun and educational way to trace the legacy of your hair!

It turns out Sa’Riya is not the only person in her family to have beautiful curly hair. She gets her curly hair trait from her mom, who also passed it down to Sa’Riya’s two sisters! Sa’Riya’s mom and her sister both have 4c hair and her oldest sister has 4b hair. So many beautiful curly haired ladies!

4) How do you like to wear your hair?

One of Sa’Riya’s favorite 4C hair styles is a high Afro puff. Her mom says that it is easy to do and it looks very good on Sa’Riya.

5) How would you define your style?  (ie, are you a dress up girl, more casual, love to be fancy etc.  What is your favorite style for school, for dressing up, for each season, etc.

In terms of fashion style, Sa’Riya is a dress up girl. She loves to wear big dresses and sparkly shoes, like the ones that she wears to pageants. She also loves wearing clothes with bright colors.

6) Hair care tips!  What are some hair care tips you can share for taking care of your curly hair? Best advice for kids with curly hair?

The biggest hair tip Sa’Riya’s mom can give to curly girls is to gently detangle your curls. Detangling is very important to retain your length. If you do not detangle properly you will not see growth. For Sa’Riya’s 4c curls, her mom uses a detangling spray or water. Then she finger combs and then finally uses an ez detangle brush. That being said, it is also so important to add moisture to your child’s hair before detangling. Using a detangling cream or any type of moisturizer is known to simplify the detangling process, which makes it easier on both the child and the parent managing their curly hair.

7) What do you wash and condition your hair with? How often?

In terms of curly hair care routine,I wash and condition my hair once a week with Moisture Love hair care products. Only once a week because too much washing will dry out my scalp and hair. Everyone has a different balance.

8) How often do you wash your hair and why?

Sa’Riya only washes her hair once a week because washing her hair too much will cause her scalp and hair to dry out.

9) Are you a morning hair washer or an evening washer, why?

Even though Sa’Riya did not give a specific preference, the time in which you choose to wash your curly hair is totally dependent on you. Washing your hair either in the morning or in the evening has its own pros and cons, but making time to wash your curly hair is based on your time and convenience. What is most important to remember is that every person with curly hair needs a proper hair care routine!

10) If you do your hair at night and sleep on it, what do you do in the morning? Any tips for making the style last overnight?

I protect my hair and styles by wearing a bonnet to bed.

11) Has curly hair impacted your child and her self-image, please provide details on her “hair journey”.  Did she always love her hair or was it something that happened over time?

Because Sa’Riya is only 2 years old, it’s likely that she has not been impacted by her curly hair yet. It is so important to teach your child how to embrace their hair starting from a young age so that they won’t be negatively impacted by people’s statements.

11) Have you read our Curlee Girlee book series? If not get your copy by clicking here. Our Curlee Girlee books were written to ensure that all curly girls belong to our Curlee Girlee family and learn to love and embrace their curls understanding that their hair is part of a greater legacy they share with those who came before them and will one day share with those who come after.

I have not read the curly girl book but look forward to doing so
